CHAPTER 3

Instruments with Strings

Some instruments that have strings are violins, violas, cellos, basses, guitars, and banjos. These instruments all have strings and a long neck connected to a hollow part that has an opening under the strings. The strings vary in thickness. They are attached near the end of the hollow part and to pegs near the end of the long neck. The strings run over a bridge that holds them up and keeps them separated. The musician can use his or her fingers to press the strings onto the neck. This will shorten the strings and change the pitch of the note produced by the strings when plucked or bowed.

Tension in the strings can be changed by turning the pegs. Musicians use the pegs to tune their stringed instruments. You will see violinists and cellists both pluck and bow. Banjos and mandolins are always plucked either with a finger or a pick. Guitars are plucked or strummed.

Other stringed instruments, such as the harp and piano, are built differently. Like the guitar, though, the strings of the harp are plucked or strummed. Piano strings are struck with soft covered mallets that are connected to the keys on the keyboard.
